PostHeaderIcon Scalp Hair Loss In Women Can Be Devastating

There are so many jokes about bald guys, but scalp hair loss in women is nothing to laugh about. It seems normal for a man to lose his hair but highly unnatural when a woman starts to lose it. For women, hair is a sign of beauty. It’s something women fuss over, spending a lot of time and money to perfect.

Psychologists have studied the reaction of both men and women who have suffered extensive hair loss. Men are upset about it and it causes stress, there’s no question. But women’s suffering and emotional trauma about hair loss can be much worse than a man’s. While a man will just gripe about it, women will feel shame and confusion. They worry more about how they’ll be regarded socially. It’s a blow to a woman’s pride and self esteem.

When men find that they’re losing their hair, there’s a vast network of hair restoration places, products and family to offer them support. A man’s wife can pat her husband’s hand and reassure him that he’s still a real ‘man’. But when a woman starts losing her hair, no one will joke about it or look for a silver lining. They don’t have a support system. It’s a cause for shame.

There are men in movies, television and magazines with thinning hair or a shiny bald head. They’re still highly regarded in society as being attractive. Women don’t see other women with thinning hair in public. It’s hidden away, unless you have lost your hair due to cancer. Some women in the public eye have unabashedly presented themselves with no hair, but we excuse them because they’re ill. We have sympathy and compassion for these women. But for healthy women with thin, patchy hair, we have nothing but scorn. Something’s got to change.

There are treatments for women with hair loss – it just depends on the reasons for the loss in the first place. Women post-partum frequently lose their hair. It comes out in big handfuls in the shower, but usually once a baby is weaned, that hair will grow back. Hormone deficiencies such as hypothyroidism can be treated with medication. Follicle damage or hair damage due to over processing and tight ponytails or corn rows may be reversible and OCD conditions such as irrational hair plucking may be controlled, too.

These are treatable conditions. Alopecia, which is the same type of natural hair loss that men suffer from, is the one condition that causes women so much shame. Thinning of the hair due to aging can be just as upsetting.

Women and men alike have discovered new hair products that claim to restore hair thanks to new advances in science. However, if hair loss still continues a dermatologist should be consulted to prescribe either medication or a restoration program.
